THE WEATHER TIN HANDLES large nightstands

Kamis, 12 Mei 2016

Besides the 12 days of fog, the weather has been nice enough here that I have been able to
spray paint some things out side. As well my friend calls just to let me know how
upset he is that its warmer in Western Canada than at his home in Central Florida.
Heres hoping spring comes to everyone a bit sooner than expected.

This is a pair of nightstands I finished thanks in part to the nice weather.
They are quite large like the ones below.

They are painted in 50 -50 mix of ASCP Old & Pure White.

I used a set of antique tin swing handles that have been sitting around in the Etsy shop. I really
adore antique handles and was surprise these were still available, so I liberated them.
The back plates are thin and the detailed shape is pressed into the metal. I love the look!

To create these I took a plain set of pine nightstands and attached coffee table legs to them.
If you want to learn more about how I do this check out this article I wrote:

This pair of large nightstands has been listed on the SHOWROOM page with price and dimensions.

1930s VANITY TURNED INTO FRENCH NIGHTSTANDS

Kamis, 28 April 2016

Two little drawered units were lovingly donation just before the holidays.
Thank you again to the Donator!

"See the side panel on this one ..."

This use to be a 1930s dressing vanity that was divided into two.

I was able to add some costly additions such as these tall hardwood legs and 4 matching
pieces of antique hardware. The little swing handles have a really nice patina.
They mount with tiny screws through the front. In this case I predrilled first because there is
never room for error when installing tiny antique brass flat head screws.

It seems like there a thousands of these stepped topped art deco vanity desks out there.
It also seems like there are even less people who like them, me included.
I started a PINTEREST page devoted to finding great looking up cycled 1930s vanities
so some of them can be saved.

ONLY ONE COAT OF ANNIE SLOAN french nightstands

Kamis, 14 April 2016

These nightstands were painted in ASCP and they only have one coat. I wanted to show how this
paint is perfect for creating a time warn finish, easily. All the furniture finishes so many of us
covet are very European and this paint just so happens to be European along with its creator.

I painted both cabinets with one coat of grey (custom mix) from top to bottom using a
2 inch brush. I took extra care to get a nice coat on the drawer faces but that is easy
because I always take my drawers out and paint them standing off to the side.

In many areas you get spots where your brush has left "see through marks", thats what Ill call them
for the purpose of this review. They are rough once dry and of course look like you missed a spot
but once you sand these smooth with a 220 grit paper they look to be original wear from years gone by.

The white accents are painted over the grey with a small artist brush. I like to take my time when
doing this and enjoy it. If you have a ball and claw foot to paint turn the piece upside down and get
a crisp line painted between the ball and claw to define it well.

If I were to add dark wax to these they would look like they
sailed across the ocean right from a French villa.

Heres the BEFORE and AFTER shot below.

WHITE WAXING NEW TIP blue nightstands

Minggu, 03 April 2016

Somewhere along this journey of mine I learned about coloring your wax with ASCP.
I have played with it on a few projects in the past but not to great extent.

Before stepping out to try this technique I do suggest it is best to get a good handle on regular waxing first.

Quite simply you added a small amount of paint color to a small amount of wax and mix it together.
It can add so much depth and style to any project.

These elaborate little beauties got a serious make over with a final coat of whitened wax.

Next time I will show you the details that went into building what I have nicknamed
*The Blue Paris Beauties*

HOW TO HIDE STOLEN APPLIQUES IN PLAIN SIGHT paris blue nightstands

Kamis, 31 Maret 2016

A lucky lady contacted me over on Facebook when she saw a glimpse of
my unfinished Paris Blue Night Stands
I dont often get sentimental or anything when my furniture leaves for its new home,
but these 2 pieces looked so amazing I did mourn the lose for a short time.

Yesterday I shared how to color your wax and promise
to show all the different elements that went into transforming these
homely little cabinets into beautiful bedroom pieces.

#1 Remember to take a real before picture.
(not one after you remove the hardware and start painting)
#2 Add new curvy front kick.
(cause your too lazy to fix the chipped and peeling veneer)

#3 Turn upside down and install legs.
(perfect time to remove cobwebs - customer wont pay extra for them)
#4 Paint some more before you finish.
(how else are you going to get those signature paint streaks in your hair)
#5 Glue the appliques to your drawer fronts.
(no one will ever suspect you pride them off a piece of furniture road side)

#6 Start waxing.
(cause you are still not finished)
#7 Install drawer handles and paint some more.
(who would have thought, the original ones worked best)
#8 Add another applique.
(cause you can)

#9 Build and install doors.
(dont take any photos of this step)

#10 Paint tops in white and wax to a high gloss.
(dont tell you wanted to make them look like marble but everything
was already taking so long and costing too much)

#11 Take pretty pictures.
(so you can reminisce later in life when you are too old to remember)

Coming soon ...
I will be addressing my obsession for bedside tables
with this next set seen below.

There is a sneak peak over at Facebook if you cant wait!

In other news a new batch of Georges candles have made their way to
The Passionate Home. Be sure to get yours before they sell out again.
TPH is in the picturesque courtyard of downtown Langley at 20506 Fraser Hwy.

GEORGE HAS A NEW SKILL candle making and fairytale nightstands

Rabu, 30 Maret 2016

Berry Scented Pink Candles Embellished with Vintage Buttons
Believe it or not but George learned how to make candles this weekend,
and he really enjoyed it. Ive mentioned before that he likes his mason jars
and Ive also mentioned to him he needs to do something with them not just collect them.
I ran across a candle making kit at a local yard sale and bought it for him.
He learned how to add dyes to the wax to get different colors as well as different scents.
Vanilla Scented Cream Colored Candles in an Aqua Painted jar with White Florida Clam Shells
Turquoise Candle in Turquoise Painted Jar Embellished with a Hand Picked Florida Beach Shell
He has added them to his Etsy store to share with you,
and by chance if they dont sell ... Merry Christmas family!
But I have faith they will sell just look at how cute they are.
Mean while I finished up a set of story tale Snow White Nightstands.
Looking through all my photos there doesnt appear to be any before photos or even
in progress ones. It might have something to do with being the candle makers helper.
They started out as a boxy little set with some ugly screwed in spindle legs and mismatched hardware.
The new legs were from an dusty musty auction stool I picked up.
The scalloped piece on the bottom center was left over piece from a
another table and I cut to fit it between the legs.
I chose these handles because their shape mimiced this scalloped detail so well.
There is also a bit of interesting news shared over at 4 the love of WOOD facebook page
