MUD ROOM MAKE OVER

Selasa, 24 Mei 2016

Our mudroom had been consumed by water bottles, pop cans, discarded boxes, and all the other
crap I didnt want to see in the main part of the house. Time had come to reclaim this room and one
morning of surfing Pinterest got me motivated to start. Type in "AWESOME MUDROOMS" and see what you get.

Day 1, was a cooler morning as it had rained the night before. I was feeling the need to stay inside,
do some cleaning and eventually a great deal of purging. I had plenty of plastic bins that I could
fill and they would work just fine outdoors. So when George got home he had a stack of full bins
waiting for him to take to the shed. Thank you honey do! The shed will be made over some other day.

Cleaning up the clutter went quickly also thanks to George dealing with the bottles the week before.
This room is a small addition (5.5ft x 7ft) built around the back door of the trailer. It is not heated
and in the winter it is cold. Keeping shoes and coats in there is off limits. I couldnt find the right use
for the room, until now ...

Welcome to the new Etsy Shop!

Handles, knobs, hooks, and castors dont get too upset when they are a bit cold. All the Etsy stock has
been over whelming the other rooms in the house. I was tripping over bags sitting in the living room,
sharing space in my dressing room, and the worst was giving up the kitchen island to constant piles of
hardware in some state of being finished. Now its all contained in this one space, even the work surface.?

Day 2 went a lot slower. This was the day to fill and organize all the baskets, buckets, bins, and boxes
with labels. Gathering all the hardware around the house was so much fun, I was finding new space
in almost every room. Once the room started to come together with the bench I designed and built, I
wanted to add a soft edge for when we work in there so I hit Home Sense and bought this rug.
The rug is the only item purchased for this makeover, everything else we had.
The window on the back wall looks out to a storage area so I created a new view with a vintage
mirrored window, it makes the room feel bigger and reflects more of the light from the chandelier.

There is a bit more to this makeover which includes the chandelier and a custom paint job
but that will have to wait for another day ...
But there are a couple more photos in the home tour if interested:

PHOTO FUN shabby chic frames

My collection of second hand ornate frames has been getting bigger lately
so this past weekend I started painted, photographing, and uploaded them on my
SHABBY CHIC ACCESSORIES page.

When Im photographing smaller things, NOT FURNITURE, I can have a lot more fun playing around with props and set ups.

These are some of the fun photos I took that didnt make the advertising page.
And all the props you see are things I have around me everyday in my own home.
Great examples of second hand finds.

I have no formal education in photography but my best tip for getting good pictures
is NATURAL LIGHT. Do not mistake that with direct sunlight.

The SHABBY CHIC ACCESSORIES page is getting a bit of a new look while Im
uploading the new frame photos ... stop in for a look see and let me know what you think

THE OLDE FARMHOUSE MARKET

The 3rd Olde Farmhouse Vintage Market is this Saturday September 28th 9am to 6pm
Admission is $5.00 - Free Parking!!
It is being held in doors at the Albion Fairgrounds 23514 105 Ave. Maple Ridge
https://www.facebook.com/events/148745518651654/

I wont be there with all my goodies (thats another story)
but there is over 40 shabby chic and vintage vendors going to be there offering amazing items.
One of those vendors is Dianne of The Painted Door

I met Dianne this past spring, she is a follower of mine and wanted to donate a piece of furniture.
When we were talking in her driveway she asked me if I would like to come in and see some of what
she had done. Well Im always excited to see what other ladies are doing so definitely accepted the invitation.

She show me her dining table, chairs, and hutch that she painted. She also turned a regular glass
coffee table into an awesome oversized tufted living room ottoman. She had a few smaller pieces
around the house painted including this storage bench upstairs.

The thing that she showed me last was some cupboard doors partially painted in the garage,
it was great meeting with her and seeing what she had accomplished. We finished up, said our
good byes and I was on my way again.

It wasnt till the next weekend she sent me this picture early in the day asking how much I thought
she should sell them for. Well later that day they were sold.

A few days later I offered a sign suggestion and she did this next sign,
which ended up going to The Passionate Home.

And I tell you she hasn`t looked back since.
This next picture is from her facebook page.

So this weekend in the wonderful wet west coast style stop in to the
OLD FARMHOUSE VINTAGE MARKET
and see Dianne at THE PAINTED DOOR.
Tell her George and sent you!

Calico bowl

Well, Ive been up and working since about 6 this morning on the commissioned bowl for my friends mom. I wound up making her a "calico"-type bowl of hickory, mahogany, black ash,  and red birch.  It has a hickory bottom for stability and a hickory layer for the rim to make it strong. Ive also made it in a tumbler style so her paint brushes will stand up right and not fall out.
This bowl was tough to make as tall bowls are. And the biggest problem proved to be keeping it attached to the lathe as it was spinning. I used a jam chuck to over come this (more about jam chucks in a later posting) but at one point I got my fingers jammed between the chuck and the tool rest and the tool-I could have broken my fingers! As it is they are pretty sore at the moment.
Here is a photo of the bowl in its roughed out state:
I still need to smooth the interior of the bowl but the basic shaping is done. Ill be putting on a finish beginning Monday.
I think a calico bowl would make a great yarn bowl. What do you think?

MY KITCHEN CABINETS TODAY

Senin, 23 Mei 2016

My kitchen cabinets started as dark dirty brown mdf, very typical for a seventies mobile home.

To update and lighten the kitchen I added an inexpensive trim to the face of each door and painted them.
They were painted in a cream color semi gloss latex paint, followed by a dry brushing of a darker cream latex on the trimmed area. The handles were changed to dark wood knobs and the hinges were
painted with an oil rubbed bronze spray. I did these cabinets years ago and Im still very happy with the look.

CHALK PAINTING A GOLD MIRROR

When ppl see me painting a mirror frame they ask why I dont mask it off before I start.

?????

Because you can wash ASCP right off your mirror after it dries.

ASCP can also be distressed with water before waxing.
I like using wet kitchen sponges with a soft side and a coarse side.

Once you achieve the look you want you can finish it with wax or not!
Because mirrors do not typical get handled very much you can get away with not waxing them.
Plz consider its use in your home when making this decision.
I have waxed this one because it will probably get moved around and used in future photo shoots.

Here it hangs on the wall, safe for now!

Be brave and paint your mirror!

DECO DESK

Minggu, 22 Mei 2016

Labour day has come and gone and our sunshine did the same.
I was able to get 5 pieces painted in the nice weather over the weekend.
One of the pieces was this cute little deco desk.

I sprayed it with a 50% - 50% ASCP mix of Old White & Pure White.
and lightly edge distressed it before hand waxing.

I filled the original holes on the six drawers so I could pick what ever size of fancy handles I wanted.
The desk was all finished but the drawers had to dry over night. I was so anxious to pick
the handles I pulled a whole basket from my stash and spread it out on the bed.
Of course when George comes to bed there has to be something said,
"what is going on here" and he emphasises it like Scott from The Canadian Pickers.
Before you know it I have him helping me chose the right handles for the project.

The knob on the middle drawer is a new piece, its a fun acrylic bead and rhinestone knob.
I dont think you can tell from the photos but it is quite large and really pretty.

The handles were salvaged from the dresser vrs. vehicle grudge match earlier this year.

For those who didnt get to read that story:

I used this little project to write a tutorial on how to install handles without a tape measure.
That article is currently being written so watch for it soon.

If you need some shabby chic white hardware stop into the FirstFinds Etsy shop.
We have some fun misfit handle sets to choose from and a large selection of
outlet and light switch plates plus tons more.

OH MY BACK bedside cupboards

My back is a large part of why I finally chose to stay home and work.
I did love my *real* job but I was coming home daily in so much pain it wasnt worth while anymore.

The other day as I began working on these bedside cabinets I bent over to pick something up.
Back issues are quite normal for me as I have been dealing with them for a
large part of my life and I am weakest holding things in front of me.
As I started to stand up I gave a little cough and a shooting pain ripped across my back.

Needless to say I continued to work on these precious little guys,
but George was home standing over me making sure I took it easy.

We found them on our recent Thrift Shop Hop which turned into
a true Garage Sale Grind as we treated one lucky lady to a day filled with fabulous yard sales.

I painted them in old white, added new legs, and glass hardware.

The interior cabinets have been lined,

along with the drawers.

And here are a couple of the new treasures that can be found at
firstfinds etsy shop
