ONLY ONE COAT OF ANNIE SLOAN french nightstands

Kamis, 14 April 2016

These nightstands were painted in ASCP and they only have one coat. I wanted to show how this
paint is perfect for creating a time warn finish, easily. All the furniture finishes so many of us
covet are very European and this paint just so happens to be European along with its creator.

I painted both cabinets with one coat of grey (custom mix) from top to bottom using a
2 inch brush. I took extra care to get a nice coat on the drawer faces but that is easy
because I always take my drawers out and paint them standing off to the side.

In many areas you get spots where your brush has left "see through marks", thats what Ill call them
for the purpose of this review. They are rough once dry and of course look like you missed a spot
but once you sand these smooth with a 220 grit paper they look to be original wear from years gone by.

The white accents are painted over the grey with a small artist brush. I like to take my time when
doing this and enjoy it. If you have a ball and claw foot to paint turn the piece upside down and get
a crisp line painted between the ball and claw to define it well.

If I were to add dark wax to these they would look like they
sailed across the ocean right from a French villa.

Heres the BEFORE and AFTER shot below.

ANNIE SLOAN THE PAINTED LEATHER CHAIR

Minggu, 28 Februari 2016

(Sounds like an adventure novel if you ask me)

Everyone has been asking to learn more about my painted leather chair, even Annie Sloan herself has been getting impatient with me. I didnt want to get everyone excited about something that might be a fail so the plan was to wait and finish this post now during the holidays offering some time and use to report how it is holding up. Unfortunately the trials of life stepped up this week to give us a warning.

Dec 24th was for last minute grocery shopping, a few small gifts and visiting with friends.
My well laid Christmas plans quickly changed first thing as the caller explained my Mother was on her way to the hospital having a stroke. It ended up being mild and she was home that same night to recover. My family spent the next 36 hours filling in where they were needed to get all her cooking, cleaning, wrapping, and decorating done. The holiday definitely had a different meaning for the grown ups and the kids simply asked why grandma was using a cane. I want to thank those who have sent messages, well wishes, and prayers.

Now its time to get back to the famous painted leather chair.

I think this has been my favorite painted chair project so far, maybe because Im keeping it.

Here is a look at some of my other painted upholstery.
My Union Jack chair  and my French Berger chair were both very successful
and both offer different ways to redo upholstery with paint.

My painted leather parlour chair has settled into my space well
and I dont see it going anywhere soon.

It all started last summer when I got two of these chairs. You cant see it in these photos but there
was a lot of damage to the underside including the frame and leg that needed to be reinforced.
The original leather on the seats is old and worn with cracking which will crack the paint.
More on that at the end.
I sprayed the right chair in ASCP and distressed the frame with 220 sand paper.
When using my sprayer the paint is always watered down slightly, more info on my sprayer here:
http://blogspot.ca/2011/07/to-spray-or-not-to-spray-paint-sprayer.html
The color of the white chair is a 50 - 50 mix of AS Old White and Pure White.

?

The entire chair was then clear waxed.

Then a day later her frame was dark waxed.

The stripe and graphic came next. The stripe is AS Coco and marked out with painters tape.

After she was finished she was invited to attend a Home Show and hang out with Annie Sloan.
See there is Annie and George talking about the chair or me but they are pointing at the chair
Im sitting in, Im sure of it.

3 months later the seat is showing all the cracks the original leather already had.
The paint is not coming off but the cracks are showing and it looks great!!!
My favorite part about painting upholstery is that when you are done and you wax it,
it is now so easy to wipe clean with a cloth. I have also bit the bullet this fall and painted
a velvet chair to show you how costly and catastrophic it can be to paint the wrong type of material.
Dont hold your breath on that post but it will show up in your email eventually.

ANNIE SLOAN IN VANCOUVER and A BALLERINA DRESSER

Senin, 15 Februari 2016

Annie Sloan creator of the infamous paint I use so much of was here in Vancouver during
the Vancouver Home & Design Show earlier in October. My painted leather chair was also
making an appearance at the same show and in the same booth.

We made our way to the show to see the ladies from TPH and meet with Annie. An unexpected treat
for us was to meet her husband David. We did get to chat for some time before everyone had to get
on with their day. Annie still had an interview and a demo later that afternoon and we had many
stops to make on our way back into the valley. We were able to send a little something home with
Annie, one of Georges man made candles.

With so much going on this month Im happy to report I have even been able to get some work done
on furniture. I started painting and fixing this little dresser months ago. I saw this ballerina graphic
used on a dresser at the Lucketts Spring Market and knew I was going to use it one day.

This dresser is smaller than it looks but looks even cuter in person. I used antique brass drop pulls on the drawers and double bun feet underneath. The color is a creamy white (50-50 old white & pure white) and it is distressed with a hand waxed finish.

FURNITURE ABUSE and ANNIE SLOAN sunflower bedsides

Minggu, 14 Februari 2016

Im always in the market for a piece of furniture that has been abused. Not ever DIYer likes to repair
items or are comfortable with working with damage. In this case my night stand had quite a rough
surface from daily wear and tear. When you work with imperfections and want a vintage look
highlight them, sand them more, help them stand out. That is where the character starts to show.

It is hard for each of us to see it as amazing because it is our own work. We were taught through out
our lives to color inside the lines yet today we covet those beautifully aged pieces be it authentic
age or reproduced by hand. It is all about breaking the rules.

Breaking the rules was the first thing I heard Annie Sloan talking about while she was on stage today
at the Vancouver Home & Design show. We headed down town to meet up with the local stockist
and chat with Annie and hubby David while they are visiting beautiful British Columbia.

This chair Annie is sitting in was created for this weeks (Oct 24th) Chairs for Charity Auction. Like
the creators using this colorful Annie Sloan fabric, I had fun working with the bright colors of
the green jars I painted and sunflowers I used in my photo shoot so I ended up naming them
 "SUNFLOWER BEDSIDES"

I added a cute vintage pair of cabriolet legs to the fronts of each cabinet. The basket where I keep
legs I find is getting very thinned out, I wasnt even sure I had these, but alas they were the perfect fit!!

HOW FAR DOES ANNIE SLOAN GO red dresser

Jumat, 12 Februari 2016

After the hustle and bustle of working with my Chair for Charity,
getting it to the photographer early, and Georges accident and ER visit,
I have finally finished one of the dressers I previously started.

Isnt this color amazing, the knobs made me do it!

I have been wanting to show you how far Annie Sloan Chalk Paint can really go.

This little pot of ASCP in Emperors Silk (seen above)
covered this vintage 4 drawer dresser (shown below)
and I still have some left in the pot.

On average I can paint 4 pieces this size with a regular size can,
but it also depends on your original finish and what you want to achieve.

The original finish did lend its self to red so take that into consideration when choosing your color.
I did also paint the top but changed my mind and washed it off.

This dresser is probably at least 100 years old. You should see the construction its amazing.
The story as we were told when we purchased it was
it spent many years through the middle of the 20 century
on Campobello Island on the east Coast of Canada.
The owners uncle was a Canadian senator with a vacation home there
and friends with Franklin Delano Roosevelt who often visited as the Roosevelts also
vacationed on Campobello.

Before I gave him his new color and a shiny top
I fixed all the issues that had arisen with age.

My full post about my charity chair is still coming
included with that will be some pretty pictures Glam It Up Photography took.

It does appear I spelt *AVAILABLE* wrong, but I love this picture.
Glam it Up Photography took my imperfections and made them look amazing.

Plz do not send me emails, my claim to fame is wood working not spelling,
and I recall I was yelling at my mischievous printer at the time I was writing it.
Its all the printers fault!
