HOW TO MAKE A FRENCH VANITY

Sabtu, 14 Mei 2016

The beginning of my week started with rolling an old art deco vanity on a dolly into my work room.
The plan was to take it apart and make a pair of nightstands. I even took some photos of different
angles to show you how I was going to do it, thus this sideways before photo.

I hummed and hawed for a while before committing to the deconstructions because I really liked
the pair of drawers in the middle. Its an unusual characteristic of these pieces.

I had the right size legs to make it tall enough to sit at and I could reused the
wood that was originally on the bottom to make new back legs, so I choose to save it.
Below, you can see the faded area where I stole the wood from to make the back leg.?

Shes been painted in a creamy white and soft pink. I have a very specific recipe for the pink if you
want to use it. I started with a quarter can of ASCP Old White, a single drop of Emperors Silk, and
3 drops of Coco. ASCP are very strongly pigmented especially the red so be cautious.

1930s VANITY TURNED INTO FRENCH NIGHTSTANDS

Kamis, 28 April 2016

Two little drawered units were lovingly donation just before the holidays.
Thank you again to the Donator!

"See the side panel on this one ..."

This use to be a 1930s dressing vanity that was divided into two.

I was able to add some costly additions such as these tall hardwood legs and 4 matching
pieces of antique hardware. The little swing handles have a really nice patina.
They mount with tiny screws through the front. In this case I predrilled first because there is
never room for error when installing tiny antique brass flat head screws.

It seems like there a thousands of these stepped topped art deco vanity desks out there.
It also seems like there are even less people who like them, me included.
I started a PINTEREST page devoted to finding great looking up cycled 1930s vanities
so some of them can be saved.

ONLY ONE COAT OF ANNIE SLOAN french nightstands

Kamis, 14 April 2016

These nightstands were painted in ASCP and they only have one coat. I wanted to show how this
paint is perfect for creating a time warn finish, easily. All the furniture finishes so many of us
covet are very European and this paint just so happens to be European along with its creator.

I painted both cabinets with one coat of grey (custom mix) from top to bottom using a
2 inch brush. I took extra care to get a nice coat on the drawer faces but that is easy
because I always take my drawers out and paint them standing off to the side.

In many areas you get spots where your brush has left "see through marks", thats what Ill call them
for the purpose of this review. They are rough once dry and of course look like you missed a spot
but once you sand these smooth with a 220 grit paper they look to be original wear from years gone by.

The white accents are painted over the grey with a small artist brush. I like to take my time when
doing this and enjoy it. If you have a ball and claw foot to paint turn the piece upside down and get
a crisp line painted between the ball and claw to define it well.

If I were to add dark wax to these they would look like they
sailed across the ocean right from a French villa.

Heres the BEFORE and AFTER shot below.

HOW TO REUSE OLD WINDOWS lovely french shelf

Senin, 14 Maret 2016

Last month I realized I have never had a hand towel in the bathroom. Ive lived here for years and I
would hunt down a big bath towel hanging on the door to dry my hands. Last week I went out and
found some nice pretty soft ones care of HomeSense. And I cant believe Ive converted so quickly
that I am using them several times a day. Before I enjoy them too much I wanted to use them in a
photo shoot.

I love to create, whether Im building something or taking a great picture of it. It focuses my mind
and keeps me moving, but I have to work at my own pace to rest my back as it needs.

This time I took a few days and custom designed a French shelf around two vintage windows.
Ive done something similar years ago but then it was a dresser I repurposed instead of windows.

These windows are like the ones I remember from elementary school. They have an interesting
look with a wire mesh inside the glass and texture outside leaving them slightly frosted.

Every piece of trim I used on this shelf was salvaged from other discarded furniture.

I hope this has inspired you to find different ways to repurpose vintage windows.

FRIGHTENING TO FRENCH update

Sabtu, 20 Februari 2016

I built this shelving unit 3 years ago and ppl still ask me about it all the time.

I took a frightening dresser and a little side table and made this beautiful French étagère.

Lets start at the beginning ...
I used the horrifying dresser for lumber supplies,
and I stripped down this little maple table for the base.
(update: with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint no stripping is needed now)

I built the upper portion with the hideous dresser and fastened it to the table.
The color you see above is a grey primer coat and below is the a creamy white latex.

The crown detail at the top is a decorative wall shelf.
The frame of an old mirror was salvaged for the front trim.

The fronts edge of the shelves were decorated with chair rail.

and there you have it,
FRIGHTENING teenage dresser TO stylish and FRENCH
