REBUIDING ANTIQUE DRESSERS replacing drawers

Minggu, 01 Mei 2016

Both of these dressers where curb side finds. They were from different homes
during a community clean up week and understandably destine for the dump.
Not many ppl could or would have wanted to save them, they were that bad.
It is hard to know where to start explaining what happened.
But I will start where you can see there is something wrong.
In this fairy tale picture of the first / white dresser you see no top drawers.
This is correct ... absolutely no drawers or parts could be found in the rest of the rubble pile
during the time I was strapping her to the roof of my SUV and getting hoots and haulers
telling me what a great find I got.
"Ya right buddy get a closer look then tell me that."
I ended up making new drawers!
Okay I did not make brand new ones, thats not what I do here or even what I suggest you do.
I was lucky enough to have some old desk drawers that I was able to make work after cutting.
They were the right height but too long and a bit narrow.
After altering the drawers so they werent so long I had to remove and replace
the middle supports inside the dresser because the new drawers were narrower.
Get ready for the technical diagrams ...
if you have a short attention span, just like pretty pictures, or simple never plan to do this yourself
skip past the next 3 images.
The dresser is laying on a table and on its back to make working inside easier.
You have made it past the how things work section ...
Now enjoy the rest of the pictures.
I also removed and replaced the original vertical divider on the front with something wider.
I promise it really is the same dresser.
There are a lot more details to share that went into this dresser and the other, like
repairing broken drawers,
rebuilding a drawer you only have half of,
rebuilding missing applique bits,
gluing veneer down on countless edges
gluing bubbled veneer in the center of a surface
filling in missing veneer
replacing an apron,
and how about
building a complete back for a dresser,
but all this in due time.

New equipment and an owie

Hi Everyone,
Well, I got an anniversary present today--a new disc sander. This is a heavy duty critter that will be bolted down to a work bench that is in the planning stages. It spins very fast, has an adjustable table in front of it and I can do a lot of finish sanding on it.
In my elation to use it, I accidently caught my fingers on the surface of the spinning disc and Ive partially sanded the tips of several fingers of my left hand. So Im upstairs, smarting a bit from that.
And my back is hurting a bit this afternoon. Im going to take the rest of the evening off. And possibly tomorrow, too.

What defines cabin decor? Cabin decor doesn’t really even need to be in a cabin. All it needs to do is create a rugged warmth and make a home feel like a rustic retreat in the woods, wherever it may be located. It reflects a love of the outdoors, and most of all it makes a home feel welcoming and, well, homey.
Browse through their Cabin Furniture to find out how you can match your lighting and furnishing together to give your home that complete look.
Rustic and natural looks pay homage to nature and offer that cabin-in-the-woods feel, and that look can be accomplished with decorative accessories, raw finishes and nature themes. Decorative elements like clocks, wall hangings, art and window treatments can all do a lot to create a natural look. Cabin decor also creates welcoming warmth with inviting colors, traditional looks and just the right lighting. Lighting alone can work wonders - a soft glow from chandeliers, rustic lamps and wall sconces makes a home feel open and welcoming. Add in elements of comfort throughout the house - like throw pillows in the living room, rustic dinnerware in the kitchen and plush bears and moose to add children’s cabin decor to the kids’ room - and your house or cabin is suddenly looking like home.

STAYING CALM WHILE BARGAINING

Last week we ended up at very cool yard sale at one of those houses out in the country
where the owner decided to empty the dusty dirty contents of the old shed into the driveway
and see what they could get for it all.

I bought 4 of these solid wood carved chairs, and yes I could barely contain myself as I tried to stay calm
during the bargaining process. Calmly remind yourself each of those nail heads has to be pulled
and will probably take a few hours of your life away, not to mention in hailing that musty shed smell.
TIP: Quickly in your head figure out your top dollar you would pay per chair and start with a much lower offer.

This one is nicknamed the Glamorous Grey.
It has 3 different colors of paint, the base is medium grey, the second coat is light grey,
and the final color, dark grey was handpainted on the carved details.

Here is a peak at the Pale Provence Chair.
Each chair takes countless hours to rework and one chair had to be rebuilt.
By the time I am done you shouldnt be able to tell it from the others.
Im doing them all in different colors and Ill be sharing all the paint colors
and technics I used over the next week.

FAUX MARBLE painting a dresser

Our furniture make over class was a great success and the trip over all was fun but Im pooped out!
Until I get all the photos in order, all my supplies restocked, and the tools put away,
Im going to show you some projects from the past and ideas I have not shared yet.

Its an *OLD WORLD* style dresser with a faux marble top.

We got this dresser many years ago. It was bright teal when we got it!
The color was very pretty but it had many stickers and the finish was damaged in several places.
It really deserved a classic finish!?
BEFORE               and                    AFTER

Since we redid our dressing room it really did not have a place with us any more.
So it was time to move on and let it go to a home where it could be used again.

Thats when it went to live in Joelles foyer!

It was meant to be!

The Chippendale style hardware I used was sprayed with OIL RUBBED BRONZE
from Rustoleum. Its a delicious metallic chocolate color.

The top has seven coats of poly in this photo but a few more were applied to
give it a thicker glassy finished look to the faux marble top.
I learned to faux paint marble long ago for an in expensive bathtub surround.
I do not have more photos or a tutorial on how to paint this but if you want to learn the
different technics, there are tons of tips, tutorials, and videos on line to help you.

The body color is ASCP old white with Minwax dark wax over top.
The bright teal is still inside lining all the drawers. How fun is that?
Traditional outside with a bit of fun inside.
TIP:If you are thinking about painting the inside of your drawers remember there are several areas on the
outer edges of drawers that rub against another part of the dresser. Paint doesnt slide well against
other painted surfaces, and each layer of paint can make things tighter, so try to paint only one of the
surfaces that rub and not the other. In the photo I have offered one example but the most important
place to use this tip is on the side of your drawers.
Paint either the drawer side or the inside edge of the cabinet body but not both.
Consider which one is seen more often.

PRIMITIVE CLOSET

As my shoulder starts to feel stronger I have started to work on some bigger projects. Ive been
picking pieces to work on that dont take too much muscle, or building. More along the lines
of some clever ideas and some painting.
This closet needed a new floor, some minor repairs, and bit of a punch.

The original color of the cabinet is a creamy mocha. I gave it a good sanding and distressed the
edges. I white washed the doors and sanded them smooth before waxing. The fleur de lis were
stenciled with dark wax. That was a spur of the moment experiment and it worked. I also dark
waxed the inside edge of the raised panel on the doors.

I sat cross legged on the floor in front of the closet marking all the cuts needed for the new white
tongue and groove floor boards. Then I would take the boards outside and cut them with the jigsaw.
You start at one side and work your way across. I enjoy the process of making things fit and work.
