WHAT TO DO WITH A BAD DESK DRAWER

Selasa, 01 Maret 2016

This is one of my favorite types of projects to work on. Something passed on to me from
someone who knows no matter how bad it looks believes I can turn it into
something fabulous. And this desk did come out looking amazing so keep reading.
This secretary had stickers on it, screws in it, ink stains, drawers that didnt work,
but the largest problem was one drawer was missing the whole corner.

My solution was .... get rid of the drawer.

I moved the bottom drawer into the top hole and altered the frame.
I repositioned the front kick board up and cut the side panel back to the rear legs.
Check out the photo above for details.

I put new legs on the front that just happened to be the exact length I needed.
If they had been shorter I could have cut the back legs to match the length.
Here she is standing up again with two drawers and new legs.

The inside of the top was also a big challenge to deal with. It had floor tiles stuck to the work surface,
melted wax to remove, holes that needed fill, and the piano hinge that held the fold down was
bent and missing screws. All of which I fixed but it took a lot of time and patience.

WD-40 is great for removing stickers and adhesive. Be sure to wash the area with soap and water after
using it. WD-40 is an oil based product that will cause water based paint to react funny on the surface.

Here she is all painted and put back together with new drawer pulls.

I hope this will get you thinking about your options for saving wood furniture from the landfill.

Heres the before and after ....

Band saw back online and snow is due this week!

Hi Everyone,
Well, the new blade is back on the bandsaw and weve cleaned and lubricated all the moving parts and that critter is good to go so I cut up a whole pile of lumber that was beginning to stack up.
Ive got several tea boxes in the works right now-all of them are laminated blocks of different types of scrap lumber. They are all about 3 inches deep and six inches in diameter although I may cut them down just a little from those dimensions. All are out of wood that have been kiln dried and the scent in all of them is mostly absent and thats important for a closed container.
Ive brought them all inside to dry as its getting too cold for glue to dry now.
Im going to work on one of them early tomorrow morning and Ill post photos afterwards.
Its supposed to snow this Wednesday!

GOLDEN ERA DEJA VU night stands

Déjà vu, from French, literally "already seen"

You maybe thinking you have already seen these night stands
Even thinking it was just a few days ago
Well the truth is I found another perfect set on our thrift shop hop
and came home to work on them right away.
So yes you are seeing something very similar again but with their own magic.

Im calling this set *The Golden Era Pair*
because of the warm caramel color showing through
from the maple colonial finish, and a hint of gold edging on the kick.

In person they are rich like honey!

The hardware is from the twenties, and unfortunately I didnt have matching swing handles
for the bottom drawers but you barely notice.

They have been painted with 50% Old White & 50% Pure White.
I get asked a lot which ASCP white color I use most of and the answer is ....
I use them both equally.

In the olden days, you know before ASCP I used a custom mixed creamy white color
that could be used in both pure white decorating and off white decorating.
Mixing the 2 ASCP whites at 50% achieves that same perfect mix.

?
So if you cant decide which white is for you, try mixing them.

The Blue House Bowl Discussion and plans

Hi Everyone,
Well, I decided to begin working on a bowl that I am planing on donating to a charity called the Blue House. This charity supports an orphanage in Uganda that takes in girls and young women who have been orphaned because of AIDS. Every year the ladies at my church have an annual craft fair to raise funds to support these young women.  And yours truly donates cutting boards and other stuff for sale every year.
This year, amongst other things, I plan on donating a full-sized salad bowl to the sale and this blog posting will be the first in a series about how the bowl was made. I hope this will give people a window on how a large bowl is made and get them interested in the sale.
So, I have gotten a large 12"x3" white ash bowl blank and this is what I will be using for the bowl. The wood is unseasoned, meaning that it has a considerable amount of water in it and so we will be making a green wood turning and this adds several steps to our turning process, and certainly nothing that Selkie Wood Works cant handle! Heres what were going to do: Im going to mount the block on the lathe and completely turn the outside of it and partially turn the inside of it and leave the bowl about 1" thick. This is much thicker than a standard bowl and the reason Im doing this is this will help the bowl retain its round shape while its drying out. When we come back to the bowl in several weeks time, it should have dried out enough to allow me to finish turning and shaping it, and with any luck, it will be ready for the Blue House sale, which always takes place the first weekend in December.
So were off for another adventure in the wood shop. So make some coffee and stop by for photos and a complete process discussion on the Blue House bowl.

DREAMING OF THE SEASIDE blue console table

Im certainly in the mood for a vacation it seems.
Dreaming of the blue ocean waters, the sound of the shore birds, and my favorite sea shells.

So instead of packing our bags Im painting and decorating in the seaside cottage theme.

This table and clock shown below were both painted in custom mixed blues
over a chippy white finish. The base color is ASCP Provence with whites and browns added.

To achieve a similar look:
you need a good thick white paint layer base (dry)
then chip large areas of the white off with a metal tool creating potholes in the finish
metal chips paint well

Once you have a horrible looking cow patchwork of missing white paint
cover that with your blue color and once dry sand back the areas you chipped the white away
this will highlight the potholes and show the surrounding edge in a halo of white
giving you a pretty time warn, beach weathered feel.

The table is just deep enough to use as a laptop desk or
placed in your front entry to make an overwhelming statement everytime you walk in.

CHRISTMAS DEER AND A SNOW DAY

I chose a woodland theme to play with this year for Christmas decorating. It stated with the burlap
ribbon I used on the Christmas tree. I had picked up these stocking hangers at Walmart along with
the crystal snow tree in the middle. My baby pinecones are from Brick & Mortar and the smaller
shiny trees are a second hand find. They have candles behind them. (battery tea lights) I have also
used a few sprigs of faux greener along the shelf.

A glitter covered reindeer wreath got perched a top of a black urn. The same black urn I use with a
topiary ball in some of my furniture pictures. I simply pulled the greenery ball off the stem and sat
the wreath in front of it.

My stockings were a unique find at Potters Christmas Store, but they had to be purchased on the 50%
off coupon weekend. I planned to be there right at 9am when they opened and I found out quickly so
did everyone else. The parking lot was full, the extra parking lots was full, and the road side parking
was full. I was patient and a spot opened, we got in the store and picked out the stockings, before
we knew it we were through the cashier and on our way. Thank you Potters for being so organized!

By now you must have noticed the title and the theme of reindeer hanging around our home.
The bed has a deer and even the wrapping paper has tons of them prancing around.

This morning we woke to our first official snow. We had a light dusting earlier this month and it was
gone by that afternoon. This snow fall should look pretty for the rest of the day but with warmer
temperatures forecast tomorrow it wont be here long. We typically get one nice snow to enjoy the
rest of the time its rain. This Wednesday the forecast is calling for rain. Enjoy todays photos.
