Annual Blue House Christmas Boutique Bowl Raffle

Senin, 25 April 2016

Hello Everyone,
Every year the parish of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in St Paul Minnesota hosts a Christmas boutique to raise funds that support an orphanage in Uganda for young women and girls who have been orphaned by AIDS. This year in addition to crafts and wonderful foods, a full-sized bowl from Selkie Wood Works will be raffled off. This bowl was handmade from a solid block of ash wood. The drawing will be held on December 4 at 12 noon. You need not be present to win.
This is a good cause and every dollar is put to good use.  This Christmas let’s all do something really good for a group of very vulnerable youngsters.
Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. If you live locally and would like to purchase one let me know via Facebook or the SWW blog and I’ll get one to you. If you live out of state and would like to purchase a ticket, send $3.00 to Selkie Wood Works, PO Box 21157, Eagan, MN, 55121 along with your name, telephone number and your email address. I’ll make out a ticket for you and email you a scanned image of it.
Thanks,
Vickie Woodcock

JOY JARS christmas tutorial

Sabtu, 16 April 2016

Ive nicknamed this project JOY JARS for the first set I ever saw
done by Miss Niamh of Kathleen Thomas Designs

This is a simple tutorial with big impact and continued use.
Its also another use for our ever loving Mason Jars we ALL collect.

Supplies:

Bath Salts - $8 Walmart 4kg
Metal Spray Paint
Tealite Candles
Adhesive Letters
Canning Jars w/lids

Start with getting your lids painted in the color of your choice.
Using a metal spray paint will ensure durability.

Fill the number of jars you need for your perfect word with your Epsom Salts.
Fill to the bottom of the threads.

Next adhere the letters to your jars.
Use the opposite side to any original lettering your jars already have.

Add your tealite.
If put at the right level to the jars threads the flickering candle light will bounce off the rings.

After the holidays,
remove the candle, screw the lids on, and add them to your bathroom decor
with the original lettering facing out.

You now have the perfect excuse to take a nice long bath.

FOUR LETTER WORDS THE SECRET TO AN AMAZING CHRISTMAS BED

Senin, 21 Maret 2016

My four letter word is *SNOW*. What would your four letter word be?
Careful now we are talk about Christmas!
For this decorating project I printed out letters on regular white paper, cut them out, and taped
them in place on my window. The snow flakes are tree ornaments also secured with tape. You can do
this on most any window or mirror and you just have to think of how many letters you want your
word to have and think of all the Christmas words available to you ...
 JOY - ELF - TOY - NOEL - STAR - DEER -SNOW - MERRY - SANTA - PEACE - FAMILY
 and so on.

Now for my easy Christmas bedding tip ...

What I have done is buy an inexpensive red plaid sheet set and paired it with my white bedding.
A sheet set usually comes with pillow cases, a flat sheet, and fitted sheet. This is more than enough
red and plaid to set the holiday mood in the bedroom without buying a new comforter or cover.
You can either have a large fold over of the flat sheet or you can use it to cover everything.
Ive also added a warm knitted throw at the foot and this can all be used long after Christmas.
Try to avoid spending money on bedding that is exclusively Christmas themed.

Here is a peak at where I store my Christmas stuff, its a storage box spring under my bed.
Years ago I was about to get rid of my box spring all together until I found this option.
My Christmas decorating has been stored in there ever since.

And I have added some new mirrors to the Accessories page:
http://blogspot.ca/p/mirror-for-sale.html

This large ornate one would be great just about anywhere in your home.
And below I have 2 of these vintage tall wood mirrors.
Maybe use both in a hall way or just one for a dressing mirror.

The Chair is NSF.

CHRISTMAS KITCHEN DECOR

Rabu, 16 Maret 2016

I find it hard to fit Christmas decorations into my small kitchen so I went looking for inspiration this
year. I found wreaths hung on cabinets which I adored but this felt too big for my little space still.
I kept searching. Then I found simpler embellishments hanging over double exterior doors and I was
off to the races. I just had to work on a smaller scale!

walmart wreath bought 2 years ago
I had everything I need to make them and started stealing bits from an old wreath I wasnt using.
Consider buying a whole wreath if you have several cupboards you want to do. Look at how many
pieces they have to use and Im sure this one cost less than $24 a few years back. Another alternative
for inexpensive faux greenery is the thrift store. People donate it and they bag it up for sale.

I hot glued several leaves overlapping for the flat base, this is how I established the size I
wanted my finished pieces to be. Then I used faux pine, pine cones and faux berry sprigs.
long twist ties can be reused from new packages of Christmas lights
It is best to use ribbon that has a wired edge or your bow will sag. Each door will need about 5 feet of
ribbon. Start at one end of your ribbon and fold it over to make loops that will end up being your
bow. Keep pinching these together in the center until you have the number of loops you want. Finish
off by wrapping a long twist tie or wire around the center where you have been pinching it. Make
sure to leave a foot and a half or more of your ribbon to hang over the cabinet door.

Now take that bow you made and attach it to your greenery with the wire.

Ive hung mine with some tape on the inside of the cupboard doors.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS DECORATING!!!!

CHRISTMAS DEER AND A SNOW DAY

Selasa, 01 Maret 2016

I chose a woodland theme to play with this year for Christmas decorating. It stated with the burlap
ribbon I used on the Christmas tree. I had picked up these stocking hangers at Walmart along with
the crystal snow tree in the middle. My baby pinecones are from Brick & Mortar and the smaller
shiny trees are a second hand find. They have candles behind them. (battery tea lights) I have also
used a few sprigs of faux greener along the shelf.

A glitter covered reindeer wreath got perched a top of a black urn. The same black urn I use with a
topiary ball in some of my furniture pictures. I simply pulled the greenery ball off the stem and sat
the wreath in front of it.

My stockings were a unique find at Potters Christmas Store, but they had to be purchased on the 50%
off coupon weekend. I planned to be there right at 9am when they opened and I found out quickly so
did everyone else. The parking lot was full, the extra parking lots was full, and the road side parking
was full. I was patient and a spot opened, we got in the store and picked out the stockings, before
we knew it we were through the cashier and on our way. Thank you Potters for being so organized!

By now you must have noticed the title and the theme of reindeer hanging around our home.
The bed has a deer and even the wrapping paper has tons of them prancing around.

This morning we woke to our first official snow. We had a light dusting earlier this month and it was
gone by that afternoon. This snow fall should look pretty for the rest of the day but with warmer
temperatures forecast tomorrow it wont be here long. We typically get one nice snow to enjoy the
rest of the time its rain. This Wednesday the forecast is calling for rain. Enjoy todays photos.

DECORATING A STORE FOR CHRISTMAS

Sabtu, 27 Februari 2016

Halloween has passed and here in Canada our Thanksgiving was in October so it is straight on to Christmas now. As Peter Pan would say "second star to the right and straight on til morning."

GOOD NEWS AND BAD ...

I am not doing any markets this season as it is physically too demanding,
but that does give me room to shop the markets, time to help decorate TPH,
and focus on writing some much needed tutorials for the blog. Don`t forget to check out the
Christmas tutorials I already have available: http://blogspot.ca/p/how-to_9274.html

Me and all the ladies at The Passionate Home spent 2 days behind locked doors and brown paper
moving furniture, unpacking ornaments, setting up Christmas trees, untangling lights,
sweeping and dusting, all to transform the store for Christmas.

Stop in to see all the pretty rooms we created,
listen to the wonderful music playing in the store,
let the ladies know they did a great job.

this trio of owls are available for sale at http://www.thepassionatehome.com/

THE 7 UP CHRISTMAS TREE

Minggu, 14 Februari 2016

This year I put my Christmas tree in a vintage 7-UP crate. Our tree is a gorgeous faux blue spruce
4 ft tall tree. I bought it years ago from The Bay in downtown Vancouver.

Below left you can see the tree is just being set up and started to get decorated.
Below right all the lights are strung and the tree is all trimmed.

When your family is young and you have children running around the house Christmas is very much
about them. And this includes decorating for Christmas too. You trim the tree with the kids and each
ornament you put on the tree brings back memories of past holidays. Once the kids have moved out
and are setting up their own homes and their own trees its time to decorate for yourselves. For some
it is a very hard concept but just like anything in life you must teach yourselves to do.

Start out with the thought "I get to decorate the way I want"
And try to start early in the season so you have many days and nights to enjoy your hard work.
My house does not get Christmasified in a day, one area gets worked on each day over a week.
As each area starts to glitter with lights it spurs me on to want to do a little more somewhere else in our home.

Decorating for yourself to enjoy is just as important as decorating for your family to enjoy.
