DECO DESK

Minggu, 22 Mei 2016

Labour day has come and gone and our sunshine did the same.
I was able to get 5 pieces painted in the nice weather over the weekend.
One of the pieces was this cute little deco desk.

I sprayed it with a 50% - 50% ASCP mix of Old White & Pure White.
and lightly edge distressed it before hand waxing.

I filled the original holes on the six drawers so I could pick what ever size of fancy handles I wanted.
The desk was all finished but the drawers had to dry over night. I was so anxious to pick
the handles I pulled a whole basket from my stash and spread it out on the bed.
Of course when George comes to bed there has to be something said,
"what is going on here" and he emphasises it like Scott from The Canadian Pickers.
Before you know it I have him helping me chose the right handles for the project.

The knob on the middle drawer is a new piece, its a fun acrylic bead and rhinestone knob.
I dont think you can tell from the photos but it is quite large and really pretty.

The handles were salvaged from the dresser vrs. vehicle grudge match earlier this year.

For those who didnt get to read that story:

I used this little project to write a tutorial on how to install handles without a tape measure.
That article is currently being written so watch for it soon.

Building a Computer Desk

I consider myself a decent carpenter. I have built all type of things out of wood from decks, houses, boats and furniture. For a while now I have been day dreaming about build myself a nice big computer desk with plenty of shelves for all of my books and other junk. This past weekend I decided it was time to put all my thoughts to work and build the desk.
The desk needed to be cheap but good looking. I chose to build it out of 1" pine lumber because it is the cheaper lumber, soft and easy to work with, and looks pretty good. I plan on painting the desk a light color so I am not concerned about buying expensive wood with beautiful wood grains running through it. Pine is just fine!
So my work began and in about 4 hours I had my basic structure up, no problem.
There is still alot to be done but it is coming along nicely and was pretty simple.

I HACKED THE HEMNES SECRETARY DESK

Sabtu, 07 Mei 2016

Im not sure what constitutes an official Ikea Hack but check out what I did to
an Ikea Hemnes Secretary Desk.

Below to the left is what an original Hemnes Secretary Desk looks like (older model)
On the right is how it looks after I replacing the legs with curvy dining table legs.

BEFORE                                         AFTER

The Hemnes Secretary Desk is all pine wood and the top portion is all complete and can be
separated from the bottom by undoing eight "L" brackets.
That will leave you with a simple base frame to work with. You can see each of the
brackets sitting at the top edge on the inside of the frame.

These metal corner brackets are original and held the straight leg in place. I moved them
down to line up with the threaded rod of the replacement leg.
I then reattached the top to the base and painted it in a creamy distressed white.

There is a bankers chair that goes with the desk. It is a modern oak chair with a really
high lift that works perfectly with the desk. I cut out areas for the chair arms to tuck right
under the desk when its not being used.

This IKEA Hacked secretary desk with bankers chair is listed on the SHOWROOM page with
price and dimensions.

Senin, 25 April 2016

I put together a new before and after photo to share a desk I finished.

BEFORE                                              AFTER

I know a desk was not in the list of upcoming projects early this week and I never know how these
pieces creep their way into the process but no matter the desk is here and looking quite dapper.

The body is painted in a distressed creamy white, it has vintage industrial pulls added,
and the drawer faces are the original rich chocolate stain with a wax finish.

THE LIONS DESK my desk

Sabtu, 09 April 2016

My new desk started with several broken or missing legs when I bought it.
I was able to removed what was there and repaired
what I could and these legs will be used for another project.
Ive had a set of amazing antique claw feet waiting for just the right project,
(you can see them below)
what better project than my own shabby chic curvy white desk.
The desk wasnt a priority to work on as I had other furniture to get finished.
But then out of the blue I had a complete day of no creativity.
My Mojo was just gone!
It was unnerving, unsettling, and can you imagine how hard it was for George to be around me!
And what I mean is not a lazy day watching movies, I mean 0 creative ability yet tonnes of mess made.
Fortunately the next morning I was running full speed and created something unexpected.
I started working on this poor vanity piece that had its legs cut short.
The pictures are deceiving, it is only 22 inches high.
I built a shelf display to add to the top with the intent it would be another great kitchen piece.
It looked good but I found there was a disconnect between the 2 pieces in style.
I white washed the back boards just before bring it in because of an impending rain storm.
The only available place to put it while it was inside was on the new desk I was waxing.
In that moment we both stood back and agreed they belong together, and we were keeping it.
My new desk has been added to our home tour page,

THE MOST GEORGEOUS DESK

Minggu, 20 Maret 2016

If you follow on Facebook you know George has been bragging about a new desk
I have been working on. Well its finished and in place in the kitchen.

First thing I feel in love with when I saw this desk was the legs, big surprise huh?
I found it while we were out yard sailing this past weekend.

Then I realized this indented curve in the center would lends its self perfectly to my small space.
That was the moment when the light bulb went on!!!

And when I discussed with George swapping out his desk it was a no brainer.
the words he used when talking about his current desk was "its fine"
the words he used when I asked about the new desk was "its pretty cool"

When George is sit here and I have to walk past him it is tight,
with this newer desk there is a bit more room.
It may only be inches but around here every inch counts.

I had planned to strip and stain the top until I found this under the old finish.
So I have simply stripped and waxed instead.
SEE I REALLY DO LOVE WOOD!!!

One handle was missing but I had a similar looking pair so I installed them on the middle drawer.

The desk top even got an accessories update.
