NOUVEAU BROTHERS matching shelf cabinets

Jumat, 13 Mei 2016

The brothers are finished after 10 months.
Yes I started these last October and Ill explain why it took so long very soon.
The upper cabinets have a hinged glass panel with an art nouveau design I hand painted on the glass.
Ill talk about all the details and bits that went into making these beauties next time.
There is still so much gathering and editing of pictures because I used parts from over 8 different
salvaged items to build them.
The color is a creamy white and they have light edge distressing.
The knobs are white ceramic and the legs are cast iron.

WHATNOTS TO WONDERLAND wonderland shelf

Sabtu, 23 April 2016

I do so love mashing together bits of furniture to make something amazing.
My frightening to french cabinet has the highest page views on this blog of all my projects.
Its all over Pinterest and it was built long before Pinterest was ever popular.
I have been craving to build something similar, so without further ado plz meet the
Whatnots to Wonderland shelf.
WHATNOTS TO WONDERLAND             FRIGHTENING TO FRENCH

It certainly would not look out of place on the set of ONCE UPON A TIME
which is ironically filmed locally and a favorite show of mine.
I named this piece the WONDERLAND SHELF because of all the
whimsical curving shapes I used and created.
Our lead cast member was a simple solid wood provincial nightstand.
It is a high quality, solid wood, Canadian made Malcolm piece
that is just too damn short at 24".
Next on stage was a heavy pine, book shelf head board.
With this piece I created the shelving that would sit on top of the nightstand.
Here are some of the other whatnots used to build the
Wonderland Shelf.
2 different aprons that had been removed from earlier projects were used to trim the shelves.
The whimsical shape of the upper cabinet came from the backs of 2 dining chairs, and
the beautiful wood carved topper was torn from a 1960s upholstered living room chair.
THANK YOU LISA FOR THE DINING CHAIRS!
I was over joyed when I realized these equally whimsical over sized knobs
would work more magic on the drawer faces.
The back of the shelves are lined with a white anaglypta wallpaper.
Anaglypta is a Greek term meaning "raised ornament".
These wallpapers have an embossed or texture surface that resembles fine plasterwork.
Anaglypta papers are washable and paintable.

NEW CHINA NEW BOOK SHELF AND THE WAY WE LIKE TO LIVE

Senin, 11 April 2016

For several weeks we have been searching for some new bowls on our Saturday morning outings.
Some of our soup bowls have broken and we found ourselves constantly frustrated without
the same amount of dishes as we were use to. Im happy to say that last Saturday we finally found
some new bowls we really really liked.
Our new English China bowls

Our every day dishes are mostly second hand finds that we fall in love with.
We have 6 of this and 4 of that and we prefer it that way.
We once bought a box of country yellow mugs with matching salad plates and for good measure
two additional plates with the same pattern but in green.

We have also found some unusually shaped pieces, including this ginkgo plate and cabbage bowl.

But most of all we like purchasing fun patterned pieces that we have learned
not to be afraid of and to enjoy using them every day.

We ended up paying $2 each at a yard sale for our new bowls,
we simple couldnt resist the pink thistle design.??

The weather here in BC has been great for yard sales and for painting furniture

HOW TO REUSE OLD WINDOWS lovely french shelf

Senin, 14 Maret 2016

Last month I realized I have never had a hand towel in the bathroom. Ive lived here for years and I
would hunt down a big bath towel hanging on the door to dry my hands. Last week I went out and
found some nice pretty soft ones care of HomeSense. And I cant believe Ive converted so quickly
that I am using them several times a day. Before I enjoy them too much I wanted to use them in a
photo shoot.

I love to create, whether Im building something or taking a great picture of it. It focuses my mind
and keeps me moving, but I have to work at my own pace to rest my back as it needs.

This time I took a few days and custom designed a French shelf around two vintage windows.
Ive done something similar years ago but then it was a dresser I repurposed instead of windows.

These windows are like the ones I remember from elementary school. They have an interesting
look with a wire mesh inside the glass and texture outside leaving them slightly frosted.

Every piece of trim I used on this shelf was salvaged from other discarded furniture.

I hope this has inspired you to find different ways to repurpose vintage windows.
