MAKING AN OPEN AIR DISPLAY CABINET farmhouse grey china cabinet

Senin, 25 April 2016

Ill take it ...

I was excited when I found this cabinet because of the size. Most of the time I must turn away
from overly large beautiful pieces because Im not physically capable to work on them alone or they wont fit in my home to be worked on. This was one of those larger pieces I could consider because it wasnt too large and it was 2 pieces.

Ill get straight to the before pictures so you can understand my vision with this project.

Mid 70s china cabinet with glass panels everywhere in the upper portion.
The glass just had to go ...

Below you can see the upper cabinet completely stripped down, no glass, no backing.
I prefer to work on cabinets from the open back, especially to get a good paint job inside.

The original backer was a piece of cardboard with a picture of wood on it.
I redid the back with thin tongue and groove bead board. Every now and then I find
a package or 2 while yard saling, just enough to complete some of my projects.

I seriously wanted this cabinet to look like it was from an old farm house. I painted it with an ASCP
light grey mix, distressed it, sealed the Chalk Paint with Minwax Natural, then got the final look with
Annie Sloans Dark Wax. The dark wax does such a great job of simulating age.

The hardest part on this project by far was installing *CHICKEN WIRE* in the upper cabinet
but it looks absolutely perfect on this piece and there is no doubt its from a farmhouse now.
Chicken wire is also known as hex wire, keep that in mind if you are in
the hardware store about to ask for it.  When working with it you MUST have patience,
you SHOULD wear gloves, and the right stapler and cutters might help calm the process a little.
Once again my roll was found at a yard sale.

Inside the lower cabinet is open storage with a cutlery drawer front and center.
I added the perfect rustic old handle to the door.

MR P AND HIS BISCUITS store display

Jumat, 08 April 2016

We know you ladies have been wondering about the man of the house, Mrs. Ps honey do, her partner
in crime and all things vintage. Well the truth is Mr. P does have his own interest in time warn,
vintage items, they just happen to be of the guy variety.
This week in The Great Adventures of Mrs. P we bring to you Mr. P and his office space.

Have a look around at all the vintage guy things Mr P collects.
Buckets and boxes, wood and metal, gears and everything industrial feeling.
Im loving the Caribou Railway Art and wish I had wall space for it myself.

He has a galvanised bucket for keeping tad poles, sinker bags, an old fishing tackle box, car
advertising and his favorite is trunks. When he and the Mrs. are out antiquing they often play
a game to see who finds the better vintage trunk purchase.
He wins more times than she, as it would seem he has the right eye for old leather, vintage tin
hardware, and he always finds the perfect size trunk to fit the next space.

Another item he has equal passion for is old labelled crate wood.

Back in the day, labels were stenciled on crated goods and when the crate was emptied and
no longer needed the wood found its way into other furniture, like this storage box make with old
 Uneeda Biscuit crate wood.

Interestingly enough I was in a Mr. P mood and felt we had to look up some information on
this Uneeda Biscuit box. I found out prior to 1898 crackers were sold loosely packed in barrels.
Not a very fresh way to package crackers!
Uneeda Biscuits were developed at the turn of the century by The National Biscuit Company, AKA
Nabisco and were packaged in a new system of inter-folded wax paper and cardboard to keep them
fresher. Who knew reading a decorating blog would get you a history lesson on a snack food.

Mrs. P chose the burlap drapes and Mr. P picked the industrial candle lantern,
it resembles Restoration Hardware a tiny bit eh???

The room came together for us quite well and it looks even more amazing in person,
so be sure to stop in to see it for yourself in the next 2 weeks. If there is something in the display
you would like to buy get in there sooner.

Here is a recap of all the rooms we have featured from Mrs. Ps home this summer

THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF MRS P white bedroom display

Kamis, 07 April 2016

The Passionate Home and 4 the love of WOOD have teamed up for the summer to have some fun and
to bring you a grand story told through the Passionate Home store displays and shared through 4 love
of WOODs blog and both of our Facebook pages ... The first install can be read here.

And so The Great Adventures Of Mrs. P. continue ...

Carrie and I took another adventure this week with Mrs. P.

We decided to take a look inside her drawers and create her bedroom right in the middle of the shop,
with a glimpse of her taste in beautiful clothes and classic jewellery.

Ill bet if you have been in The Passionate Home you never saw all these amazing pieces.
I didnt see them until Mrs. P stepped through the front doors.

I personally have a white rabbit living at the end of my hallway and when I see him watching over
things it makes me feel a bit child like and happy. It doesnt matter how old we
get we can still remember how good it felt to have magic in our lives as a child.

Being a figment of my imagination Mrs. P must have great taste in furniture,
and this vintage solid oak cabinet with crystal door knobs doesnt disappoint.
Let me show you a close up of the ornate top ...

Every Sunday night after dinner Mrs. P carries all her candles one by one and sets them up
in the bathroom where the water runs for her long soak in the tub.
Im usually fighting for the remote on Sunday nights, how about you Carrie?

A local artist dropped off some new items while Mrs. P was visiting and I couldnt
help but include one of their lovely pink rose book marks with her bedside reading.

As soon as you have a chance please come into The Passionate Home and check out the
new bedroom display and see if you can see Mrs. P hanging out close by.
Our summer displays will only be lasting a week or two before we set out on another adventure
to discover the life and world of Mrs. P.

Thank you for following along and keep watching for our next journey.
We dont even know where Mrs. P is taking us!

MRS Ps CRAFT ROOM store display

Kamis, 03 Maret 2016

WELCOME TO MRS. Ps CRAFT ROOM

she has jars and bottle, books and paints,
she has lavender and burlap, fabric and crates,
she has boxes and bins packed full of nice things
she works in this room the whole time while she sings ?

Im here to confess creating these rooms isnt as easy as we make it look.
Trying to define a specific room inside a larger space has its challenges,
but after struggling we have built a work space for Mrs. P to create in.
Annie Sloan Fabrics - top right / typography bag - middle / burlap sacks - bottom left

When Carrie and I started trying to create Mrs. Ps craft room inside the store
we found picking the right furniture difficult as well as the placement.
Craft rooms are a relatively new idea and something we all wish we had but
finding the space and setting it up can be daunting.
Every new home comes with an on suite, not many come with a dedicated craft room.?
all items shown in photo avail for purchase at The Passionate Home

Figuring out what you want to do in the space is critical to a set up that will work.
Mrs. P enjoys taking time to sit and read Annie Sloan books like this one called
Creating the French Look, so a comfortable chair is a great idea to include in the design.
love this owl!!!

Whether you are painting some mason jar vases, building a vintage photograph lamp shade or making
lavender satchels, you need to figure out how big your work surface should be. We have used a small
dining table and easily filled it with all sorts of things you would want to spread out while you are creating.

I brought in this French Provincial Server that I just finished to show how different pieces can be
used in different spaces. Also find fun and creative ways to store your supplies for easy access and
to keep your supplies out in the open so you can see what you have to work with.
Knowing what I have to work with helps me be even more creative.
Lavender satchels - top / soap from France - bottom / vintage mason jars - right
Have you heard the news? Mrs. P has ...

The Passionate Home is going to have stencils in stock very soon!
Its the kind of stencil she will be using to create all those grain sack images on pillows,
upholstery, tea towels, furniture and anything else she can think of.

Take a cue from Mrs. P and be unconventional and surround yourself with the things you love.
Just in ... a small selection of Apothecary jars
For some clever ideas check out the new store display in person,
