OH MY BACK bedside cupboards

Minggu, 22 Mei 2016

My back is a large part of why I finally chose to stay home and work.
I did love my *real* job but I was coming home daily in so much pain it wasnt worth while anymore.

The other day as I began working on these bedside cabinets I bent over to pick something up.
Back issues are quite normal for me as I have been dealing with them for a
large part of my life and I am weakest holding things in front of me.
As I started to stand up I gave a little cough and a shooting pain ripped across my back.

Needless to say I continued to work on these precious little guys,
but George was home standing over me making sure I took it easy.

We found them on our recent Thrift Shop Hop which turned into
a true Garage Sale Grind as we treated one lucky lady to a day filled with fabulous yard sales.

I painted them in old white, added new legs, and glass hardware.

The interior cabinets have been lined,

along with the drawers.

And here are a couple of the new treasures that can be found at
firstfinds etsy shop

ENJOYING PINTEREST oak bedside drawers

Sabtu, 16 April 2016

Looking through Pinterest for inspiration and seeing my own photos pop up is a blast,
but I think I enjoy reading the comments added to my pictures even more.
It helps me focus on what extra information folks might be looking for.

This image of our bedside nightstands is a big hit over at Pinterest.

One comment added to the photo reads ...
"I would love to do that with a nightstand I have,
but it would have to have some really strong support; it is heavy!
Also, I think it would be too tall to use comfortably."

Ive just finished 2 similar bedside drawers this past week and Ill tell you they are both very heavy.
The legs used to raise them up are secured with glue and screws and if your install is thought
out and executed well there would be no issue.

Here is a link to an article I wrote with some photos of a leg install:
http://blogspot.ca/2012/03/part-i-leg-up-adding-legs-to-furniture.html

Remember I use vintage pieces to build with
so typically made of hardwood these legs have been around for years already and are still going strong.

The particular legs I used for my bedside drawers were taken from elaborate dining chairs,
I personally like to have my bedsides surfaces higher than my mattress.

The legs below are shorter and are both different lengths,
so there are options as to how tall you lift your nightstands.

Here is another link to an article and photos of where these legs can be salvaged from:

APPLIQUE TRICK his and hers bedside tables

Kamis, 17 Maret 2016

Im sharing the secret to my nightstand embellishments,
and how the look can bring two pieces together.
These fancy bits are solid brass and came from a broken mirror frame.
I removed the original front bottom piece of this nightstand and installed a new
piece of wood as well as new legs.
Then with a pencil traced out the area I wanted cut, so it marched the line of the scrolls.
Next I cut with the jigsaw and sanded the edges smooth.
Because these embellishments are made of metal I had to pre-drill for my nails.
This set of bedside tables started as two different pieces but with similar style.
I brought them together using the same legs, the same pulls, and the same embellishments.

You can find side by side before and after pic here.

ARLENEs bedside cabinets

Sabtu, 05 Maret 2016

These bedside tables are going on my list of all time favorite redos.

Ive been on a mission to find bedside tables to work with, I didnt realize I had to go to Mission to
find them. Mission is a town about 40 minutes away from us and we just dont get over there enough.

George stopped in to this tiny out of the way thrift store called Arlenes.
We got to know the owner of this charming shop at the auction we all used to attend.
Sounds like she has had to make the decision to close her doors in a month.
We will be stopping in there this Saturday with our next scheduled THRIFT SHOP HOP.
Anyone interested in joining us for the day send me a email ASAP for details.
driftwoodesign@shaw.ca

I was able to coordinate the circle motif in the bottom applique all the way up through
to the drawer handles, using some of my favorite antique hardware pieces.

I finally got to use my tiny set of legs that cost me a fortune
and the perfect sized yard sale kitchen cabinet doors.

They have been painted in Old White, distressed, and waxed.

PORCELIAN ROSES AND CHANDELIERS bedside lighting

Selasa, 09 Februari 2016

We started out with bedside lamps on our nightstands,
but I would swap out the lamps any time I found something new and more exciting.
Sometimes it would be the shades that I changed or sometimes I would try a different color.
I was just never content with the look or style.
Then one day I came across a chandelier for $1 at a yard sale.
It was missng the ceiling plate and 2 of the candle sleeves, but it was only a dollar!
And this $1 chandelier happen to be the exact match to one I had already purchased a year earlier for $100.
I sprayed them out in a bright white, drilled holes to hang crystals, bought new candle sleeves,
and rewired them with cord switches at the bed height so we could switch them off easily
right before falling into dream land.
We have enjoyed them now for several months and are we are both very happy.
The light they provide is romantic and the extra space on the night stands is much appreciated.
I have coveted chandeliers with porcelain flowers hanging from them for a long time.
Just like the ones Amy sells at Maison Decor
Well guess what I found while on the hunt recently ...
PORCELAIN ROSES.
I felt like a lotto winner!
There was 3 colors in the lot I bought, white, pink, and blue.
Im keeping the white but have reluctanly agreed to let George sell the others
in his etsy shop firstfinds.
