A MAN A KNIFE AND THE ER!

Senin, 29 Februari 2016

My week has just started and Im stacked high with extra things to do.

Some of you already know that Sunday night George
had a bad accident in the kitchen making dinner.
I had to rush him to the ER for an 8 1/2 hour stay to get 7 stitches
to sew up an extremely deep slash to his finger.

This is where the extras come in for me because his hand will be
out of commission for a week or two I get to do extra house work
and serve his every ice cream request.

Trust me I do not mind because I love this man so much,
however I have my Auction chair for Charity that needs to be done this week.

I have to gather advertising and deliver the chair to the Glam It Up studio by Friday.
I have all the etsy stock to continue on my own.

I also have 2 dressers half finished but not sure when I can get back to them.

One in red and one in blue.

On top of everything I have a super giveaway for my local followers that I will tell you all about tomorrow.

And finally I wanted to let you know in all this chaos we have started our very own Pinterest Page.
It is your one stop inspirational spot for furniture re purposing and refinishing based on
both this blog and firstfinds hardware.
NOTE: George was making pork loin, mashed potatoes,
carrots and glazed onion the night of the accident.
I came back home finished cooking and tupperwared his dinner to him in the hospital.

Milwaukee Hackzall Review

Ive owned my Milwaukee M12 Fuel Cordless Hackzall since almost the beginning of 2013. Since then, Ive reached for the Hackzall more than any of my other saws and havent used my corded reciprocating saw at all this year. Every time I use it Im blown away by how powerful this little cordless reciprocating saw is. Milwaukee has managed to squeeze a lot of power out of only a 12V Lithium-Ion battery.
Considering Jerome Schnettler and Edware Ristow invented the Sawzall (first reciprocating saw) back in 1952 for Milwaukee, its no big surprise that Milwaukee would come out with such an innovative new design. Although it has the same shoe , uses the same blades and can be used for the same types of cutting activity as a reciprocating saw, it is a whole new type of tool.
While other cordless reciprocating saws merely tack a battery pack onto the back of a standard looking reciprocating saw, Milwaukee took a different approach with the Hackzall creating a compact reciprocating saw that can be used in a lot more places.
The smaller size of the Hackzall opens up a lot of possibilities. Its easy to carry and use with one hand which makes it great for using in tough to reach spots or when on a ladder. It leaves one hand free to secure the work piece but at the same time theres enough room on the small body to grab it with both hands for greater control.
The variable speed trigger smoothly controls the speed of the blade from between 0 to 3,000 strokes per minute and a bright LED illuminates the cut area. Four red LEDs next to the blade lock indicate how much charge is left in the battery. These LEDs are activated every time you pull the trigger so you dont forget to check.
A twist lock mechanism provides tool free blade changes of any blades that will fit in a standard reciprocating saw. The blade can also be mounted in reverse. With the blade facing the opposite direction you can get in some tighter spots since the shoe is shorter on the back end.
Overall the tool is built tough and can handle a lot of abuse. Ive used it for cutting 2x lumber, some metal pipes, bars and have used it extensively over the summer in the landscape to cut thicker branches that would have taken a long time to do by hand.
I dont know that Id grab it if I needed to demo a large area (nor would I use any cordless saw for that) but for the occasional cutting job throughout the day it works well. The Hackzall would be a great tool for plumbers, electricians, etc to in their tool bag whenever they need to cut through framing. Great saw for the homeowner that likes to tackle weekend projects but tough enough to withstand daily use too. Ive put the M12 batteries through some tough situations and theyve held up. Other Li-ion batteries for other tools Ive owned havent done as well through similar use.
If you already own other M12 Fuel tools you can purchase the bare Hackzall without a battery or charger Read More..

ANNIE SLOAN THE PAINTED LEATHER CHAIR

Minggu, 28 Februari 2016

(Sounds like an adventure novel if you ask me)

Everyone has been asking to learn more about my painted leather chair, even Annie Sloan herself has been getting impatient with me. I didnt want to get everyone excited about something that might be a fail so the plan was to wait and finish this post now during the holidays offering some time and use to report how it is holding up. Unfortunately the trials of life stepped up this week to give us a warning.

Dec 24th was for last minute grocery shopping, a few small gifts and visiting with friends.
My well laid Christmas plans quickly changed first thing as the caller explained my Mother was on her way to the hospital having a stroke. It ended up being mild and she was home that same night to recover. My family spent the next 36 hours filling in where they were needed to get all her cooking, cleaning, wrapping, and decorating done. The holiday definitely had a different meaning for the grown ups and the kids simply asked why grandma was using a cane. I want to thank those who have sent messages, well wishes, and prayers.

Now its time to get back to the famous painted leather chair.

I think this has been my favorite painted chair project so far, maybe because Im keeping it.

Here is a look at some of my other painted upholstery.
My Union Jack chair  and my French Berger chair were both very successful
and both offer different ways to redo upholstery with paint.

My painted leather parlour chair has settled into my space well
and I dont see it going anywhere soon.

It all started last summer when I got two of these chairs. You cant see it in these photos but there
was a lot of damage to the underside including the frame and leg that needed to be reinforced.
The original leather on the seats is old and worn with cracking which will crack the paint.
More on that at the end.
I sprayed the right chair in ASCP and distressed the frame with 220 sand paper.
When using my sprayer the paint is always watered down slightly, more info on my sprayer here:
http://blogspot.ca/2011/07/to-spray-or-not-to-spray-paint-sprayer.html
The color of the white chair is a 50 - 50 mix of AS Old White and Pure White.

?

The entire chair was then clear waxed.

Then a day later her frame was dark waxed.

The stripe and graphic came next. The stripe is AS Coco and marked out with painters tape.

After she was finished she was invited to attend a Home Show and hang out with Annie Sloan.
See there is Annie and George talking about the chair or me but they are pointing at the chair
Im sitting in, Im sure of it.

3 months later the seat is showing all the cracks the original leather already had.
The paint is not coming off but the cracks are showing and it looks great!!!
My favorite part about painting upholstery is that when you are done and you wax it,
it is now so easy to wipe clean with a cloth. I have also bit the bullet this fall and painted
a velvet chair to show you how costly and catastrophic it can be to paint the wrong type of material.
Dont hold your breath on that post but it will show up in your email eventually.

DECORATING A STORE FOR CHRISTMAS

Sabtu, 27 Februari 2016

Halloween has passed and here in Canada our Thanksgiving was in October so it is straight on to Christmas now. As Peter Pan would say "second star to the right and straight on til morning."

GOOD NEWS AND BAD ...

I am not doing any markets this season as it is physically too demanding,
but that does give me room to shop the markets, time to help decorate TPH,
and focus on writing some much needed tutorials for the blog. Don`t forget to check out the
Christmas tutorials I already have available: http://blogspot.ca/p/how-to_9274.html

Me and all the ladies at The Passionate Home spent 2 days behind locked doors and brown paper
moving furniture, unpacking ornaments, setting up Christmas trees, untangling lights,
sweeping and dusting, all to transform the store for Christmas.

Stop in to see all the pretty rooms we created,
listen to the wonderful music playing in the store,
let the ladies know they did a great job.

this trio of owls are available for sale at http://www.thepassionatehome.com/

LEARNING TO LET GO gothic sideboard

I learned about letting go of things years ago when I purged most of my belongings after a divorce.
It felt so good and the few things I kept I only hung onto for living purposes. Like the bed to sleep in
and a desk with chair to work at. It only hurt while I thought about letting the stuff go, once it is was
gone it didnt matter. And its not really hurt but a feeling of anxiety. This weekend Ive had that
same anxiety again committing to letting go of a piece I cherish. For some reason it would seem
this piece is different and its taken a few days to come to terms with the decision.

Im selling my wonderful white washed gothic sideboard. I know crazy huh!
It has a warm creamy finish and lots of storage.
The center door has a mesh panel that you can display things behind but not have to clean.

This is all vintage solid wood with carved design, no appliques. I spent some good money on
the piece years ago before digging her out of someones basement . Word to the wise, dig it out first,
then negotiate the price.

I refinished her for my TV to sit on,
but now the TV is resting on something else I love just as much.

The new piece works better for my space, it is not as long taking up less space, the cat loves
walking under it and there is a floor vent that will be a more efficient now that it is uncovered.

I promise I will miss you gothic sideboard ...
