Weavers in the early Middle Ages were called on mostly to weave tapestries with religious themes. These were often conceived as sets of hangings for churches and cathedrals.
Tapestry then found a new home in fortified castles and palaces and a new repertoire of images and themes emerged: romantic love scenes called Minneteppiche and mysterious allegories. These showed wild men and women, animals, and some characteristic interlaced lozenges filled alternately with monsters and pairs of birds, or peasant scenes of haymaking.
Military battles, armorial devices, hunts, and other adventures were another great feature of medieval tapestries. Popular designs in the later Middle Ages were mille fleurs tapestries, typified by the hundreds of tiny flowers that make up their backgrounds. They were often used in pastoral scenes and verdure tapestries. Verdures are pictures of landscapes that emphasize trees and foliage with, perhaps, a waterfall or stream, woodland birds and animals in the foreground, and a castle or village in the background.
